Church's thesis as an empirical hypothesis

چکیده
The studies of Church’s thesis (further denoted as CT) are slowly gaining their intensity. Since different formulations of the thesis are being proposed, it is necessary to state how it should be understood. The following is the formulation given by Church: [CT] The concept of the effectively calculable function is identical with the concept of the recursive function. The conviction that the above formulation is correct, finds its confirmation in Church’s own words: We now define the notion, [...] of an effectively calculable function of positive integers by identifying it with the notion of a recursive function of positive integers [...]. Frege thought that the material equivalence of concepts is the approximation of their identity. For any concepts F, G: Concept F is identical with concept G iff ∀x (Fx ≡ Gx) . The symbol Fx should be read as “object x falls under the concept F”. The contemporary understanding of the right side of the above equation was dominated by the first order logic and set theory.

Church's Thesis and Hume's Problem
We argue that uncomputability and classical scepticism are both re ections of inductive underdetermination, so that Church's thesis and Hume's problem ought to receive equal emphasis in a balanced approach to the philosophy of induction. As an illustration of such an approach, we investigate how uncomputable the predictions of a hypothesis can be if the hypothesis is to be reliably investigated...

متن کاملThe Narrational Case Against Church's Thesis
In a recent and widely aarmed paper in this journal, Elliot Mendelson 27] 1 challenges what he rightly calls the \standard conception" (230) of Church's Thesis (CT) | the conception being that CT is unprovable. Unfortunately, as I demonstrate herein, once Mendelson's target, and his attack upon it, are rigorously analyzed with help from uncomputability theory, his challenge evaporates, and the ...
متن کاملChurch's thesis and its epistemological status
The aim of this paper is to present the origin of Church’s thesis and the main arguments in favour of it as well as arguments against it. Further the general problem of the epistemological status of the thesis will be considered, in particular the problem whether it can be treated as a definition and whether it is provable or has a definite truth-value. 1. Origin and various formulations of Chu...
